Welcome to the 14th Floor! I’m John Pohl, President and CEO (Chief Elevator Operator) of strategic marketing agency 14th Floor Solutions. We strive to give our clients something we call StrategiCreativityâ„¢, which we define as strategically-based, creatively-oriented communications that generate exceptional results.

I write “View from the 14th Floor” to call attention to ads, branding strategies and other creations of companies engaged in the wonderful and increasingly challenging world of marketing communications. I’m pretty passionate about this topic, and my posts tend to take the form of either rants about the awful or raves about the awesome. To paraphrase the illustrious Charles Barkley, I might not always be right, but I’m seldom in doubt.

I’d love to hear what you think, so please weigh in with all the passion you have in you!

Prior to founding his agency, 14th Floor Solutions, John spent over 25 years in corporate marketing, holding such positions as Senior Vice President of Global Marketing & Strategic Planning for Hu-Friedy (the world’s largest manufacturer of dental instruments), Vice President of Marketing for Dial Corp and Cobra Electronics, and Director of Marketing for Kellogg’s and the E. & J. Gallo Winery.

John has been married to Mary, a kindergarten teacher and vice principal, for 32 years. They have two children: Max, who helps run 14th Floor Solutions’ subsidiary, IntersectChina, in Jinhua, China, and Lizzie, who works for a Chicago-based internet company. John has an MBA from the University of Chicago, a BA degree from Claremont McKenna College, and a degree from Phillips Exeter Academy. A native of Bemidji, MN (which also gave birth to Paul Bunyan and Jane Russell, and not necessarily in that order), John counts golf, music and reading among his hobbies.
